World Badminton set to keep to Olympic group stage format despite mixed doubles debacle
World Badminton has hinted that it is unlikely to seek changes over its controversial group stages draw which saw eight doubles’ players sent home in disgrace during the London Olympics.

Four women’s doubles pairs from South Korea (two), China and Indonesia were expelled for throwing their last group matches in an evening of debacle in August – which included shuttles being hit deliberately into the net on serve – so that they could secure more favourable draws for the knockout phase.

In previous Olympics, the mixed doubles as well as the other four disciplines have been straight knockout events. The BWF is currently reviewing playing regulations and will make any decisions on changes at its council session later this month.

However, Thomas Lund, BWF’s chief executive, said: “The group place system was a tremendous success over all. We did those two matches which were not how we would have wanted them to be.

“There were a lot of positives in the groups. It is about finding ways to not necessarily change.”

Badminton received global coverage for the controversy and the world governing body have since initiated a series of “awareness building” programmes to stem future incidents.
