COMEBA project a success in Syria

25 September 2008

Badminton Europe in collaboration with COMEBA recently supported a training camp for the national players from Syria.

The camp was held in Damascus from 7 – 11 September. Jens Thogersen from Denmark was appointed by Badminton Europe to lead the sessions. This activity was part of the Itinerant Coach project to support the development of badminton in member countries of COMEBA.

COMEBA, the Confederation of Mediterranean Badminton, has organised for its members an Itinerant Coach project.  This involves a coach visiting a country to lead a training camp or coach education course for national level players in that country.  So far this year activities have been held in Morocco and Cyprus. Camps will soon be held in other countries including Albania, Malta and Gibraltar.

Jens Thogersen coached 18 players from the Syrian national team, all aged under 22 for six days. The youngest players were 13 years old. The programme was based on technique for strokes and footwork – and tactics for singles, doubles and mixed doubles.   “The Syrian players were disciplined and seemed to pick up badminton knowledge positively” said Jens Thogersen who began his visit by watching the Under 15 national championships, “My impression is that in Syria there is a will and a commitment to improve their level of badminton and also real potential to make this happen.”   Here are some photos from the training camp -
